Chelsea close in on Rennes’s Edouard Mendy?

Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the signing of Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, according to The Athletic.

The Blues have increasingly been linked with a number of shot-stoppers since the end of last campaign due to the poor display of current No. 1 Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is said to be in the market for a new goalkeeper after losing faith in Arrizabalaga, who has failed to convince between the sticks since arriving in West London two years ago.

Having already signed six new players (Ben Chilwell, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Malang Sarr, Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva) to their squad ahead of next campaign, the aforementioned report claims that a new keeper is now on the verge of joining the London club.

A breakthrough appears to have been reached between Chelsea and Rennes, with the two sides apparently agreeing a fee for Mendy – who could cost more than £20m after add-ons are included.

The 28-year-old Senegal international has spent the entire season at Roazhon Park following his £3.5m move from Stade Reims last year.
