Liverpool Set to Reignite Marc Guehi Transfer After Summer Setback

Liverpool are ready to correct their summer transfer window mistake by launching a fresh bid for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi when the January window opens, according to Football Insider.

The Summer Saga That Never Was

The Reds’ transfer strategy last summer was ambitious. After securing the Premier League crown, they moved decisively to reshape their squad under Arne Slot. Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak arrived to fill the void left by Luis Diaz and Darwin Núñez’s departures, while midfield reinforcements came through Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong. Giorgi Mamardashvili also joined, though his signing was finalized the previous year.

Central defence remained a priority. Giovanni Leoni came in after Jarell Quansah’s exit, but Slot wanted more—specifically, Marc Guehi. The deal progressed right to deadline day, with Guehi even completing his medical after both clubs reached an agreement in principle. Yet Crystal Palace ultimately withdrew, unable to secure a replacement in time.

Why January Could Be Different

The consequences of that collapsed deal have become painfully clear. Liverpool’s defensive struggles this season contrast sharply with Crystal Palace’s impressive campaign. The Eagles sit fourth in the Premier League with 26 points from 15 matches, largely thanks to Guehi’s commanding performances at the back.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool have acknowledged their error in timing and are now prepared to act swiftly in January. Competition looms from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but both European giants are reportedly willing to wait until summer to sign Guehi on a free transfer.

Transfer expert Mike Brown suggests Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner would prefer keeping his star defender, but the club may accept offers around £35m to avoid losing him for nothing. With Guehi now firmly established as one of the Premier League’s elite defenders and an England regular, Liverpool know they can’t afford another delay.

The January window could finally see this transfer saga reach its conclusion—if the Reds act decisively this time.
