City’s Ilkay Gundogan wants to remain at the Etihad

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is on the verge of signing a new contract with the Premier League champions amid reports linking him with a move to AFC Ajax.

The Citizens are understood to be considering using the 28-year-old attacker as a makeweight in any deal for in-demand midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who has been reportedly linked with Europe’s top clubs.

The Dutch outfit would reportedly be open to that arrangement, but according to the Manchester Evening News, Gundogan wants to remain at the Etihad Stadium and is ready to ignore interest from elsewhere in favour of signing a new deal at the club.

City are happy to keep the Germany international and are now expected to start talks over an extension to his current contract after Christmas.

Gundogan has scored 12 goals and registered another 11 from 74 appearances for Manchester City across all competitions.
