Grand National 2014: Pineau De Re wins at Aintree

Pineau De Re, ridden by Leighton Aspell won the 2014 Grand National by 5 lengths at Aintree steeplechase on Saturday.


Trained by Dr Richard Newland, 11-year-old horse was the first of 18 finishers first at Aintree, with Balthazar King finished second followed by Double Seven in third.

Aspell, 37, who retired in 2007 has returned to race in 2009. His previous best was finished second in the 2003 National’s Supreme Glory.

Jockey Leighton Aspell said, “I was a bit low, but within 12 months I realised I had unfinished business and that there was some life in the old dog.”
