Chelsea lining up move for Alessandro Bastoni
Chelsea have reportedly lodged interest in Inter Milan’s defensive stalwart Alessandro Bastoni as Enzo Maresca looks to strengthen his backline before the transfer window closes.
With Levi Colwill sidelined through a long-term injury, the Blues are in the market for a top-class centre-back. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea have already submitted an opening offer worth around £43 million for Bastoni — an approach firmly rejected by Inter, who value their star defender closer to £60 million.
Bastoni at the Heart of Inter’s Success
At 26, Bastoni is entering the peak of his career and is widely regarded as one of the finest defenders in Europe. Since breaking through at the San Siro, he has become the cornerstone of Simone Inzaghi’s defence, helping Inter to Serie A glory and a Champions League final appearance.

Composed on the ball, strong in the tackle, and tactically intelligent, Bastoni has all the attributes Chelsea are craving as they attempt to tighten up defensively under Maresca. But convincing Inter to part ways with their most important defender this late in the window is proving to be a major stumbling block.
Why a January Switch Looks Unlikely
While Inter placed a £60 million price tag on Bastoni earlier this year, the timing of Chelsea’s bid complicates matters. With Deadline Day fast approaching, the Nerazzurri would face a huge challenge in sourcing a replacement — making an exit improbable this month.
However, Chelsea could reignite their pursuit next summer when Bastoni enters the final two years of his deal at the Giuseppe Meazza. Should contract talks stall, the Blues may find themselves in a stronger position to land the Italian international.
Chelsea’s Defensive Options
For now, Maresca may need to rely on his current roster unless the board decide to push aggressively for another target. Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who is edging towards the final year of his contract, remains another name under consideration as Chelsea weigh up alternatives.
Bastoni, though, remains the dream signing — one that would immediately elevate Chelsea’s defensive structure and add proven European pedigree.
