Man United plot move for Ollie Watkins
Manchester United are reportedly preparing a move for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, hoping to beat Premier League rivals Arsenal to his signature, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
Man Utd’s Striker Woes Continue
The Red Devils have struggled to solve their centre-forward dilemma in recent seasons. Despite spending over £100 million across the last two summers — including £72 million on Rasmus Højlund — the results have been underwhelming. While Højlund showed promise in his debut campaign, his form dipped significantly last season, prompting new manager Ruben Amorim to prioritise a fresh addition up front.
Watkins Emerges as a Key Target
United initially pursued Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, only to see the young striker choose Chelsea instead. Interest in Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres also faded, with the Swede reportedly favouring a move to Arsenal.
Now, attention has turned to Ollie Watkins. The 29-year-old is believed to be considering a move away from Villa Park after being left out of several crucial matches during the run-in last season. Although Arsenal explored a deal for him during the January transfer window and remain linked, United are hoping to steal a march on Mikel Arteta’s side.
Villa’s Financial Pressure Could Open the Door
Aston Villa may be forced into player sales this summer due to Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Watkins, valued at around £34 million by Transfermarkt and under contract until 2027, represents a valuable asset. While Villa are in a strong negotiating position, their financial constraints might encourage a deal.
Watkins Offers Experience and Goals
Watkins has been in excellent form, registering 31 goal contributions in 54 appearances across all competitions last season. His Premier League experience and consistent output make him a prime candidate to solve United’s attacking issues.
If Manchester United can finalise the move, it could be a major coup — not just in strengthening their squad, but also in thwarting a direct rival’s plans.
