Arsenal lining up move for Nico Williams
Arsenal are reportedly plotting a move for Athletic Bilbao rising star Nico Williams.
The 21-year-old winger has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs following a standout season in La Liga, where he netted eight goals and provided a remarkable 17 assists, helping Bilbao secure a Europa League spot.
Williams’ versatility, allowing him to play on either wing or as a centre forward, has caught the eye of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and transfer chief Edu. The Gunners are prioritising offensive reinforcements, with current forwards Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah managing just nine goals between them last season.
According to football.london, Arsenal are keen to advance negotiations for Williams this month, despite competition from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Barcelona. While Williams has expressed a potential interest in Barcelona, the Catalan club’s financial struggles make meeting his £42 million release clause challenging.
Williams, a product of Athletic Club’s youth academy, broke into the senior team in 2021 and has since become a key player for Ernesto Valverde’s side. His impressive performances have also translated to the international stage, where he provided an assist in Spain’s Euro 2024 warm-up match against Northern Ireland. He is set to feature in his second major international tournament, following his participation in the 2022 World Cup.
Despite the transfer speculation, Williams remains focused on the upcoming European Championship. In a recent interview, he stated, “I have [been] quite clear where I want to play next season. Athletic is my home. I am very happy. I have told my manager that I don’t want to know anything until the Euro Cup is over.”
