Maria Sharapova wins second French Open title in three years

The No. 7-seeded Maria Sharapova claimed her second French Open title after defeating Romania’s Simona Halep 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-4 in the French Open final at Roland Garros on Saturday.

It was a memorable performance for the 27-year-old, who won her fifth Grand Slam title of her career after Wimbledon in 2004, the US Open 2006, the Australian Open 2008 and her first Roland Garros title in 2012.

This was the ninth Grand Slam final for the Russian sensation, who became the second youngest champion after Martina Hingis in 1997.

This is the toughest Grand Slam final I have ever played and all respect to Simona,” Sharapova said. “she played an unbelievable match today.

Sharapova will rise to No. 5 from seven when the new rankings come out next week. While, the Romanian Simona Halep will jump to No. 3 spot.
