Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Cameroonian centre-back Joel Matip from Schalke 04.

The 24-year-old will join the Merseyside outfit on a free transfer after his current contract with the Bundesliga outfit expires at the end of the season.

The Reds have been monitoring Matip’s situation ever since the January transfer window, but a dispute between two club halted the deal until the opening of the summer transfer window.

Matip has been a part of the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, and has earned 27 caps for the national team.
