Serena Williams confident of 3rd consecutive US Open title

World No. 1 Serena Williams will face Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the women’s US Open final to be held on sunday after beating No. 17 seed Ekaterina Makarova 6-1, 6-3 in their last four encounter.

The 32-year-old five-time champion will fight for an 18th Grand Slam title and aiming for her sixth U.S. title in Sunday’s final.

The American, winner of the last two U.S. Opens is the heavy favourite to win this tournament. She will become the first woman to win three consecutive titles at the tournament since Chris Evert in the 1970s.

“I’m so happy – you have no idea what it means to me,” said Williams. “I didn’t know I would be here today.”

“I worked hours, more than I worked before. Maybe it’s just paying off now.”

Sunday’s final is scheduled to begin at 5pm BST.
